Polanco's 3 RBIs help Tigers rally past Angels

Placido Polanco had three hits and drove in three runs to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 9-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night.

Mike Hessman homered for Detroit, which won for only the third time in 10 games.

Mark Teixeira hit a home run for Los Angeles, which saw its magic number to clinch the A.L. West remain at eight.

With the Tigers down 6-5 in the seventh, Brandon Inge led off with a single off reliever Jose Arredondo (7-2). Curtis Granderson then tripled to tie the game and Polanco followed with a single to put Detroit on top.

Arredondo surrendered two runs and three hits in an inning.

Hessman added his first homer of the season in the eighth, with a man on.

Kyle Farnsworth (2-2) allowed three hits and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings to earn the win. Fernando Rodney got out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth for his eighth save in 12 chances.

He loaded the bases with one out, but got Kendry Morales on a foul pop and fanned Mike Napoli to end the game.

Detroit took a 2-0 lead in the first. Magglio Ordonez singled in Granderson, who led off with a single and went to third on Polanco's hit-and-run single. Ordonez's hit sent Polanco to third and he scored on Miguel Cabrera's sacrifice fly.

Teixeira put Los Angeles on the board with one out in the fourth with his ninth home run.

Gary Sheffield's two-out RBI single in the fourth restored the Tigers' two-run lead.

But the Angels scored four in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Brandon Wood doubled in a run, Sean Rodriguez's sacrifice fly tied it at 3, and Chone Figgins' fielder's choice grounder made it 4-3. Teixeira's two-out RBI single made it 5-3.

Polanco's two-run double in the fifth tied it at 5. Teixeira's RBI single in the seventh gave Los Angeles a 6-5 lead.

Detroit starter Zach Miner allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings.

Los Angeles Jon Garland gave up five runs and seven hits in six innings.
