It was no twig the 12-year-old boy held up, but a thick stick, about 9 inches long and as thick as a broom handle. What made it astonishing is that the full length of it had been driven into his neck and down into his chest — through his lung, past vital arteries and his heart.

When last we saw Derek, his pregnant patient had died. He fell into a deep depression, camping on the couch without benefit of razor or shower. Meredith’s friends eyeballed him suspiciously as he morphed into a mountain man, but things got even worse when he learned at a deposition that more of his patients die than live. Choosing to see himself as an accomplished serial killer, McDreamy refused to do any more operating and walked out of the hospital.

The Chief finally realized that the reason his hospital fell to #12 in national rankings is because it's one big petri dish of crazy. Strangely, it took the death of a fellow doctor to make him realize that a constantly revolving door of docs and interns who operate on each other is pretty weird. When doctors who were approached to replace the deceased doc refused to interview at Seattle Grace, the Chief sank into a funk that lasted almost the entire show. He snapped out of it at the end, but it's really not clear why. It's not like the hospital got any saner while he moped.

Yes, computer animators, it’s really cool how you make each individual hair in a lion’s mane stand out. And the way you fill the screen with striped zebras is a wonder to behold. But is it too much to ask for these feature cartoons to have a story that isn’t about the hero’s quest to prove himself? Could we put Joseph Campbell back on the shelf and find a new dramatic archetype?
