After reading Cormac McCarthy's famous book, 'The Road', I am now convinced McCarthy did NOT destroy our world in a nuclear war. I think it was done simply by fire. In the book there are numerous references to ash in the air, on the ground, and in the little rain that fell.

The photo that first jumped off the screen for me was the picture of the California brush fires that have decimated more than 40,000 acres worth of land as well as countless amounts of houses.
