Have we become so hardened that we don't really care about our fellow American any more? What about the homeless families who are not opining on this tonight? Do we care about them, whatever reason they are homeless? Or do we parse on that, laying blame?

This is the Obama story. Right from the get-go, Americans were attracted to a man who was more collaborative than combative. The country liked a man who fashioned himself as a healer. And yet there has always been this underlying anxiety.

Has half of America suddenly become racists in the past 8 months? What's happened to civility in politics?

There have been many variations of this discussion recently, but they haven't seemed to do much good. So I'll make another attempt with this article to interject sane reasoning back into our political discussions.
