I first came across Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy when BBC Radio 4 adapted it into three radio plays that went out on Saturday afternoons in 2003.

I must admit that fantasies like The Golden Compass are right up my alley. I've never been one for tales of knights and dragons, but give me a good magical fantasy, especially British based, and you have me. There's something about hidden worlds of magic that just get me.

The Golden Compass is the film based on the first novel in a trilogy written by Philip Pullman. The darkly twisted theme is based on witches that are heroes, angels that are homosexual, a church that is bad and a god (allusion to God) that dies at the end of it all.

With the Writer's Guild of America on strike and all our favorite television shows going dark, the place to be this holiday season for a little entertainment is the theater.
