The important task Tuesday night was to set the three couples who would compete in next week's finals. The first two couples to find out they would be there were Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson and Mya and Dmitry Chaplin — the first pleases the crowd most while the latter pleases the judges most. This left Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough and Kelly Osbourne and Louis van Amstel to fight over the last spot. Kelly had lower judges' scores on Monday night, meaning that only audience voting could keep her in the competition.

Down to four couples, "Dancing With The Stars" finds itself with two natural dancers in Joanna Krupa and Mya, one sentimental favorite in Donny Osmond, and one Cinderella story in Kelly Osbourne. Monday night, those four competed for the three spots available in the finals. And, because episodes are still two full hours long with only four couples, each couple would do three individual dances — something that's never happened in the show's history.

Shortly after receiving the honor of the encore dance for their weird robot-inspired paso doble, Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough became the first couple put through to the semifinals. To no one's surprise, Mya and Dmitry Chaplin were next to be declared safe, followed by Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson. That left only Kelly Osbourne and Louis van Amstel and Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff.

After two weeks of double eliminations that have seen so-so dancers dropping like flies, "Dancing With The Stars" is down to five couples. Monday was the first night where every couple performed two complete individual dances — one ballroom dance, and one Latin dance styled in the manner of a particular era. The Latin round was a little stronger and a lot weirder than the ballroom round, but in the end, the longtime frontrunner was back at the head of the pack.

This was to be another double elimination, just like last week's: the lowest scorer would be sent straight home, and the next two would have a dance-off, with the judges choosing the victor.

Monday night kicked off with the second week of double eliminations on "Dancing With The Stars." This week required every team to learn two dances: one alone, and one for a team confrontation between Team Paso Doble and Team Tango. Not only that, but Tom Bergeron announced early that there was another illness in the ballroom.

The first couple in the bottom two this week was Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff — a duo who had looked like early frontrunners, only to be plagued by Aaron's frenetic but ineffective style. The show then clarified that all the women were safe, meaning, as appeared likely last night, that it would be a man going home Tuesday night for sure. It was then narrowed down to Chuck Liddell, Donny Osmond, and Louie Vito and their partners for the other final two spot (meaning, among other things, that Michael Irvin was spared).

It's always dangerous when “Dancing With The Stars” plays with its format. Monday night’s episode brought new dances never before done on the show: the Lambada, the country two-step, the Charleston, and the bolero. It's safe to say that some worked better than others

Tom DeLay looked rough dancing a week ago and even worse on Monday night. With stress fractures in both feet, it seemed that the former politician was out of options. While he made it through Monday night's show, he announced Tuesday night that he was ready to take the advice of his doctors and withdraw from the competition. Sadly for Tom, he went home the week before he would have been doing his home state Texas two-step, so host Tom Bergeron told him he could come back and do it in the season finale if his feet recover by then.

This season of “Dancing With The Stars” has been, in some ways, its most satisfying. All three of the finalists — Gilles Marini, Melissa Rycroft, and Shawn Johnson — were entirely deserving, were very good dancers, and were handled well by their partners (Cheryl Burke, Tony Dovolani, and Mark Ballas, respectively). The season even had a great bonus story in fourth-place Ty Murray’s shockingly steep learning curve.

This week brought a group and a freestyle performed individually. And nothing could have benefited Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke quite as much as a group . While all three couples performed well, Gilles has a brand of confidence and assurance — he’s the only actor, remember, in a dance that’s all about projecting theatrical intensity — that was particularly conspicuous when he danced next to Shawn Johnson, who’s always battling a little bit of teenager shyness, and Melissa Rycroft, who’s always battling the desire to be a ballerina or a cheerful cheerleader. Ultimately, Shawn and Mark Ballas received two 9s and a 10 (from Bruno), Melissa and Tony Dovolani received two 10s and a 9 (from Len), and Gilles and Cheryl received predictable straight 10s.
