Like the previous seven seasons of “The Biggest Loser,” Tuesday’s finale ended with dramatic weight losses and one fit winner. But season 8 also had a few surprises, including a live marriage proposal and a new big-money challenge for one contestant.

Danny had loaned his family's gun to a still scared Julie, who was released from the hospital after her assault. When Julie heard someone creeping around outside, she grabbed the gun and handed it off to her terrified mother, Susan, who fired. Turns out it was Katherine, who was wounded in the shoulder. A panicked Angie feared that Katherine would call the police, who would trace the gun and learn that it was registered under the Bolen family's real name, so she did some fast talking and convinced Katherine that she'd look better to Mike if she took the high road and didn't get Susan in any trouble. But by doing so, she also fed Katherine's delusions that Mike still loves her.

Angie changed in front of Danny, who asked if she was going to get her scar taken care of. She said she didn’t notice it anymore, and that it would cost money. When Danny said something snide about Nick’s spending, Angie reminded him that after the explosion (so ... there was an explosion?), Nick was there for her and is a good man. Danny said he’d make enough money someday to get her scar fixed and take care of her. Probably not if he drops out of school, though, as he threatened this episode.

It's an all-male final three for "American Idol,” but gender is just about the only thing that Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey and Kris Allen have in common.

As “American Idol” enters its final stretch, there are three tiers of contenders left among the remaining seven singers. Odds are high that the champion will be one of the two leading men, but a trio of others has a chance to sneak in if one of the favorites falter. A couple of wild-cards, on the other hand, need to pull an inside straight to have any chance at the title.

The quintessential widowed TV dad, Fred G. Sanford wasn’t exactly the lovey-dovey type. He was eternally disappointed in his “big dummy” son Lamont, and he never let him forget it. Fred was left to raise Lamont after his beloved wife Elizabeth died and Lamont dropped out of high school. But Elizabeth was never far from Fred’s thoughts. He called upon her every time things stopped going his way and he had to pretend he was having a heart attack as a distraction, calling out, “Elizabeth! I’m comin’ to join you, honey!”

Let us now praise Paul Rudd. While this leading man seems to eschew the usual off-screen antics that put performers on the public’s radar, Rudd dependably brings a dry, intelligent wit to movie after movie. Whether in comedy classics (“Clueless,” “Knocked Up”) or clunkers (“Over Her Dead Body”), he has quietly accumulated an impressive résumé of engaging, entertaining performances.
