The decision by Dubai Ports World to abandon its effort to take over terminal operations at six U.S. seaports was a victory for the numerous politicians who have thundered in recent days that foreign companies have no business handling U.S. port operations.

The Dubai owned company DP World has decided not to take over managerial operations of six American ports. This is after an outcry of public protest based on the idea that it would be a threat to national security if a Middle Eastern country operated some of our ports.

Originally I was against the deal that would have leased the management of some US ports to the firm Dubai Ports World. But the more I thought about it, the more I supported the contract. I have four reasons:

Like most Americans I was alarmed at the prospect of the UAE controlling major shipping ports in the United States. Like most Americans I really had no working idea what the deal was about and how it truly affected us.

American xenophobia led to this. Nobody cared if the British ran the ports - P&O has operated here for years. This fear is rooted in ignorance and racism on the part of our elected officials. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Up until now I wasn't sure whether the issue of Dubai Ports World running some US ports is an outrage, or just an example of *how things work* overblown because of fear and xenophobia.
