The Wire

Best bets: ‘Avatar’ finally hits theaters

It seems as if we've been hearing about James Cameron's ever since he stopped work on "Titanic." No, it hasn't been that long, but the long-awaited film, featuring an exotic new world and colorful characters created by stunning digital effects, now must prove itself. Sam Worthington plays Jack Sully, a wheelchair-bound soldier who is stationed on the planet Pandora, which is like nothing we've ever seen before onscreen. And this time, no icebergs. (Opens Dec. 18.) Complete Story...

Best bets: Mandela meets Matt Damon

It seems an odd combination: Nelson Mandela's uplifting life story, and ... rugby? But the new film weaves together the life of the South African president with his nation's upset in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Morgan Freeman plays Mandela, with Matt Damon as the rugby team captain. (Opens Dec. 11)

Jacob gets to howl in ‘New Moon’

Are you ready to abandon Team Edward in favor of Team Jacob? It looks like Bella (Kristen Stewart) just might do that in the latest installment of the “Twilight” series. We’ve heard all about Taylor Lautner’s newly buff bod and Robert Pattinson’s unbelievable popularity with fans, but will all that translate to a true box office bonanza? (Opens Nov. 20)

Best bets: ‘Soloist’ hopes to strike a chord

After being pushed out of Oscar season, which stars Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr., finally hits the big screen. Will this story of a newspaper reporter who meets a homeless man who’s also a musical prodigy strike a chord with viewers? There's a chance it will be too sentimental and weepy for most audiences. (Opens April 24)

Best bets: ‘State of Play’ hits theaters

Can stand up to the fantastic BBC series on which it’s based? Hard to say, but Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Helen Mirren step into this story about journalists investigating the murder of a woman who was romantically involved with a congressman. And, hey, if you like it, you can always rent the miniseries. (Opens April 17)

Best bets: ‘ER’ treats its final patient this week

Although doctors (and viewers) have faded in and out throughout the years, the finale is still a moment worth marking. George Clooney has already made his return as Dr. Doug Ross, but the finale still has plenty to look forward to. Rachel Greene, the daughter of late County legend Dr. Mark Greene, is now a med student, and will be making an appearance along with her stepmom, Elizabeth Corday. And so we come full circle. (Two-hour series finale April 2, 9 p.m., NBC.)

Best bets: ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ hits Earth

If you haven’t seen an animated 3-D movie yet (and you should really see “Coraline”), you won’t believe how much 3-D has changed from the days of the red and blue spectacles. is a 3-D animated adventure that tells how the President (voiced by Stephen Colbert) calls on a motley crew of monsters (voices include Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen and Will Arnett) to battle a band of aliens.  (Opens March 27)

Best bets: Jimmy Fallon takes over for Conan

Even with a scorecard, it's tough to keep up with the changing late-night landscape. But this week, Jimmy Fallon will replace fellow "SNL" alum Conan O'Brien as the host of NBC's "Late Night" talk show, now to be known as The Roots are Fallon's house band. (Premieres March 2, 12:37 a.m., NBC.)

Best bets: Dakota Fanning scores double-bill

From Henry Selick, the director of “Nightmare Before Christmas,” comes an off-beat tale of a girl (voiced by Dakota Fanning) who finds a secret door that takes her to another world. The film is based on the Hugo Award-winning book by Neil Gaiman and is filmed using 3-D animation. Considering Selick’s background with Tim Burton, expect this film to be happily askew. (Opens Feb. 6)

Best bets: Springsteen's latest CD hits stores

“Working on a Dream” already made its debut on the NPR Web site, and now the album hits stores this week. After hearing the first two songs, the New York Times declared Springsteen “more hopeful” than in the past. Perhaps that’s because Springsteen, who performed at last week's concert honoring the inauguration, first played the title song during one of President Barack Obama’s campaign stops. (On sale Jan. 27)

Best bets: 'American Idol' is back

Was it really only 8 months ago that David Cook was crowned King of the World, or, at least, American Idol 2008? It was, and now a whole new crop of hopefuls, from the divine to the desperate, will blast into the spotlight when the new season of begins. New this year: Fourth judge Kara DioGuardi, 36 instead of 24 semifinalists, the return of the wild-card round, and no Thursday episodes. And, of course, endless rumors about whether or not Paula Abdul is leaving the show. (Jan. 13, 8 p.m., Fox)

Best bets: ‘Bachelor,’ ‘Biggest Losers’ return

It's a new year, and with it, a slew of new reality shows. First, is back, and with a twist — this year's single guy looking for love is a Seattle single dad. Jason Mesnick was rejected by "Bachelorette" DeAnna Pappas in July, but he won the hearts of many viewers, so now he'll be the one handing out the roses. Some viewers are uncomfortable with Mesnick in this role since he has a three-year-old son, Ty, from his first marriage. But Mesnick claims he found the woman of his dreams on the show, so now you can watch it all unfold. (Premieres Jan. 5, ABC, 8 p.m.)

Best bets: James Bond fights the Nazis, kind of

Let's see...there's "So You Think You Can Dance," there's "Dancing With the Stars." Hey, you know what we need? Another reality dance competition! premieres Jan. 4 and is hosted by step-dancing master Michael Flatley, otherwise known as the "easy" judge when he filled in for Len on "Dancing With the Stars." The show will pit different countries and continents against each other. USA! USA! (Premieres Jan. 4, 9 p.m., NBC)

Best bets: Pitt vs. Aniston at the box office

In Button (Brad Pitt) starts life as an elderly man and ages backward. Which means he begins with Depends and works his way up to Pampers. Could this film be this year’s big Oscar winner? Some comparisons to “Forrest Gump” have been made, so perhaps. (Opens Dec. 25)

Talk about a comeback; Mickey Rourke returns from obscurity with a much-buzzed about performance as a washed up wrestler who wants a second chance in The former boxer obviously drew on his personal experience for the role, which may end up earning him an Oscar nomination. (Opens Dec. 17)

Best bets: ‘Dark Knight’ comes to DVD

Why so serious? Don't you know is coming out on DVD this week? Sure, you can get the regular DVD, but the special edition contains over three hours of special features including six episodes of the "Gotham Tonight" news program. It's both enthralling and sad to watch Heath Ledger in what was one of his final roles before his untimely death a year ago. (On DVD Dec. 9)

Blu-ray hopes for a green season

Will it be a blue season for Blu-ray? Retailers and movie studios aren’t sure yet, even though prices on some players are expected to plummet from several hundred dollars to as low as $125 to $150 on Black Friday, and perhaps stay at bargain levels during the holiday season.

Best bets: Time to travel to ‘Australia’

They just don’t make sweeping epics anymore. Or do they? Writer-director Baz Lurhmann is out to prove that a romantic love story told on a grand scale can still attract the crowds of yesteryear. Nicole Kidman stars as an Englishwoman left in charge of an Australian ranch during World War II. With the help of a hunky local (Hugh Jackman, she must move her cattle out of harm’s way as the war crashes closer. (Opens Nov. 26)
