American politics turns into one big 'reality' show Source: Independent.co.uk
What's the difference between an American politician and an American talk-show host? Right now the answer is, to all intents and purposes, almost none. In the US especially, politics and the media have always been joined at the hip.

Rupert Murdoch is shrewd. He came to America with his Australian "take no prisoners" business model. He went for the lowest common denominator approach to news. He bought up everything and parlayed it into an empire. Fox has business ties that CNN and MSNBC do not have.

I have been watching the slow rot of television news for sometime now. It has gone from bad to a total waste of my time.
Michael Jackson dies and the television news programs forget that there is a great big world out there with tons of news that we are looking for.

Communities across America are suffering through a crisis that could leave a dramatically diminished version of democracy in its wake. It is not the economic meltdown, although the crisis is related to the broader day of reckoning that appears to have arrived.
Don't Feed the Talking HeadsSource: ordinary-gentlemen.com
Talk show hosts, hyper-partisan bloggers, and shock-value writers and filmmakers all have a legitimate place in the realm of the political, and perhaps rightly are paid tremendous amounts of money to fill that place.

Everyone is planning their parties for Election Night, but why not also dig in and get some good old-fashioned knowledge under belt on the preceding weekend? Here's what I would recommend as a two-day, six movie marathon.
t r u t h o u t | Silencing the Town CrierSource: t r u t h o u t
Our conduits of information have been hijacked; a man, acting like a dictator, is in the White House; the town criers of democracy are getting arrested, and Americans' heads are so full of infotainment, Prozac and Zoloft that getting off the couch seems like a real inconvenience.

Journalists As Truth-TellersSource: Common Dreams
John Henry Faulk never forgot that lesson. I'm always ashamed when I do. Temptation to co-option is the original sin of journalism, and we're always finding fig leaves to cover it: economics, ideology, awe of authority, secrecy, the claims of empire.

The Trend

The accusations against FOX and other news outlets of being biased are not without good evidence. Ardith recently sparked my idea for this topic in her article Will Fox News, CNN, or Any Media Outlet Host Fair Presidential Debates? which touches on bias in the media.

I understand that there are times when entertainment based stories have a newsworthy element that makes it more important than say real, hard news. That being said, with broadcast media in particular, I have to say that the title of journalist is becoming abhorrent and shameful.
