JENA, La. — Bail was denied Friday for a black teenager whose arrest in the beating of a white classmate led to this week's huge civil rights demonstration in the central Louisiana town of Jena, according to the father of one of his co-defendants.

The tree that started all the trouble was one of those beautiful old Southern oaks with thick outspread boughs offering a haven of cool shade in the noon heat.
It stood outside the high school in rural Jena, La., where it was known as the White Tree.
