Old Civil Rights leaders never die, they just keep manufacturing hate and discontent to make themselves relevant. And thus is the case this week in the small town of Jena, Louisiana.

JENA, La. — Bail was denied Friday for a black teenager whose arrest in the beating of a white classmate led to this week's huge civil rights demonstration in the central Louisiana town of Jena, according to the father of one of his co-defendants.

The tree that started all the trouble was one of those beautiful old Southern oaks with thick outspread boughs offering a haven of cool shade in the noon heat. It stood outside the high school in rural Jena, La., where it was known as the White Tree.
