All is right with the “American Idol” universe. It’s an all-David final, as the judges and producers have seemed to want for weeks.
"American Idol" is not, despite the many protests of Simon Cowell, a singing contest. That should be obvious from the way the singers' performances are occasionally preceded by videos that delve into their likes, dislikes, families, jobs and so forth. If it were purely a singing contest, why should we care about what kind of people they are?
Considering its long-standing status as television's 900-pound gorilla, you'd think that "American Idol" would have no problems just sitting on its laurels and cursing the need to purchase yet another bill counter to handle all the money pouring in. Add a well-timed writers strike putting the kibosh on its scripted competition and it seems like the show would be content to simply do what it's always done just the way it's always done it.
