The Shins began as a side project for singer/songwriter, James Mercer, whose primary band was Flake Music in Albuquerque. Mercer formed Flake Music in 1992 w/Marty Crandall on bass, Jesse Sandoval on drums and guitarist Neal Langford.

The Shins are trying to avoid failure. After the immense success of their indie bombshell, "Chutes Too Narrow," they've been pacing themselves, carefully molding what would be their most anticipated album to date, "Wincing the Night Away."

... Billboard announced this morning that 118,000 people saw fit to change their lives this past week, snapping up enough copies of Wincing the Night Away (Sub Pop) to vaunt the Shins' third LP to the number two spot on the Billboard 200.
