— Bravo's latest reality series Shear Genius kicks off next Wednesday after the season finale of Top Design. Hosting the new series is actress and designer Jaclyn Smith, who was part of a press conference this morning where she answered questions about her own personal style, gave out hair advice and discussed her favorite upcoming episode.
Jaclyn noted that her hairstyle will be different every week and that she had a stylist that worked just with her. Her own personal stylist and close friend, Jose Eber, will be a guest judge on the show. Other guest judges throughout the series will include fabulous stylists from Ken Paves to Frederic Fekkai. Jaclyn believes that Shear Genius has the most incredibly talented judges in their field and that one of the reasons she signed on as a host was because she knew the experience would be educational.
Jaclyn herself has been seen as a style icon, from her hair to her wardrobe. In fact, she has been designing a line for Kmart for the past 20 years. That experience, she noted, "has been an education in branding. I'm very proud that after so many years we are still here."
Jaclyn gave some advice on hairstyles, stating, "I think people need to find their own unique look." She commented that a hairstyle must be compatible to ones features, lifestyle, and personality and that just to copy another style is not good. In regards to her own hair, she likes the classic look. She loves long hair and when she was young and a ballerina, a bun was a way to go. When she had really short hair it just didn't feel like her. She noted, "I've been pretty classic in my designs and maybe that's just out of not wanting to be a slave to my hair."
As for how she stays in shape? "I do Pilates. I keep up my aerobic exercise." As a breast cancer survivor she is very aware of keeping in shape. It makes her feel good and clears her head. She also eats healthy and organic but does splurge every now and then because she doesn't drink or smoke.
Her top beauty secrets for skin care are simple: she moisturizes and washes her face morning and night with a mask once a week or so. In keeping with her natural philosophy, she doesn't put chemicals on her face. She is thinking of doing her own skin care line because she does have this certain philosophy: "I'm a purist... simplicity is the key in having it pure and no chemicals."
For the stylists on the show, the series was a marathon and Jaclyn clued us in that the most talented stylist may not always win. Instead, it is the stylist that remains calm and doesn't get desperate that pulls through. She and the judges had their favorites to win but she realized that it's more a character study of these people, and how they maintained their calm and saw the competition through to the end.
Stay tuned to watch Jaclyn's favorite challenge, the unconventional tools: garden sheers and box cutters. She doesn't know how the models stayed their chairs for that one!
