— After last week's incredible episode, 24 returns with what should be the embarkation point for a whole new story for the rest of the season. Audrey Raines is alive!! As far as I know, this is the first time 24 has made such a big departure in stories halfway through a season. This is assuming, of course, that the nuclear threat has indeed been nuetralized. I guess it 's possible that Jack's dad could return to threaten LA with a nuke, but I'm hoping that we focus on Audrey and the Chinese from here on out.
What follows are my quick thoughts while watching tonight's episode.
Oh, I forgot that President Palmer passed out. Well, I, for one, hope he gets better. Although I hope we stick to Jack and the Chinese.
Why do the Chinese hate Jack Bauer so much? Do they just hold their consuls in extremely high regard?
Jack gets looked at by a medic. Jack only feels pain in short, five-minute spans. Oh, and during commercials.
Doyle thanks Bauer for all he's done. Will this be the last we see of Doyle? How sweet would it be if these last seven hours were only Bauer? No CTU, no Milo/Nadia, nothing but Bauer on the warpath.
Audrey Raines has had a tough couple of years.
The Chinese bad guy wants the Russian nukes, not to detonate them, but for their algorithms (or something). This will give them all the information they can imagine about Russian defense.
Jack is given an hour to hand off the nukes to the Chines in exchange for Audrey.
Why wouldn't Jack just tell everyone at CTU about the situation? Too easy, I suppose. And Jack doesn't like it easy.
Palmer is alive and well, sitting in his chair. Lennox tells Palmer about the information he has on VP Daniels. Karen Hayes barges in and tells them the good news: that they've recovered the nukes.
Jack tells Chloe about the Audrey situation. Jack wants Chloe to find the schematics for the Russian nuke. Chloe tells him the only way to get the info is from Morris' terminal.
Well, that was quick. She gets the files from Morris' computer and sends them, just in time. That was suspiciously easy.
Wayne gazes longingly at a picture of his deceased brother. He's now above ground, readying to make a statement to the American people. VP Daniels arrives in his office.
Palmer asks Daniels to resign. Suck on that, Powers Boothe!
Palmer blackmails him with Lennox's recording.
Morris finds that someone accessed his system and that they uploaded the Russian schematics to someone. He's about to call security, but then Chloe decides to tell Morris everything.
Morris can't leave that alone, and says he has to tell Buchanan. Chloe decides to tell Buchanan instead.
Jack verbally bullies to military dudes while he gets the circuit board off of one of the nukes. Don't try and defy Jack, random military dudes.
Well, then. Doyle arrives, gun in hand, and tells Jack to stand down.
Buchanan and CTU know everything about Audrey. Jack is handcuffed and on the phone with Buchanan. He implores Bill to allow him to go through with the exchange. Buchanan won't allow it. He asks to speak with President Palmer.
Jack is now on the phone with Palmer. He asks for permission to go through with the exchange.
Jack gives Palmer his word (his word!) that he will not allow that circuit board to get into Chinese hands. He says that he will strap himself with C-4 and sacrifice himself if he has to.
"Mr. President, you owe me."
Palmer reluctantly allows Jack to go through with it.
Doyle is all pissed off. Deal with it, Ricky. Then he asks Doyle for his help in extracting Audrey.
Morris and Chloe have an awkward little fight.
